Pointer #161

The Importance of School Support in Determining Maternal Involvement in the Education of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders.
(December, 2008)

Parental involvement in the education of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) can lead to a variety of positive outcomes. The purpose of this study was to describe how parents of young children with ASD participate in their children’s education and also to assess the factors associated with this participation.

Pointer #160

Peer Stigmatization of Childhood Depression and ADHD.
(October, 2008)

This article examined the level of stigmatizing attitudes in children and adolescents towards peers with two common mental health conditions: depression and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Pointer #159

Out-of-Home Placements Within Systems of Care.
(September, 2008)

One of the basic tenets of systems of care is treating youth with mental health conditions in the least restrictive settings possible. Despite this goal, however, youth are sometimes placed in out-of-home settings. This study examined the patterns and predictors of out-of-home placements within systems of care.

Pointer #158

Children’s Perspectives of Their Mental Health Services.
(July, 2008)

This literature review attempted to summarize research examining foster children’s perspectives of child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS). Given the dearth of information on this topic, the authors instead reviewed the literature on children’s and youth’s perspectives of mental health services.

Pointer #157

Community integration of transition-age individuals: Views of young adults with mental health disorders.
(June, 2008)

This study sought to examine what community integration means to young adults with mental health disorders. More specifically, it examined their definitions of community integration, the ways in which they strive to achieve community integration, and the barriers and supports they encounter.

Pointer #156

Assessing the Sustainability of Systems of Care
(May, 2008)

In 1992, SAMHSA's Comprehensive Community Mental Health Services for Children and Their Families Program (CMHS) was established to support communities in developing comprehensive community-based systems of care for children with or at risk for serious emotional disturbance. This article assesses the ability of the children’s mental health service organizations initially funded by CMHS to sustain their systems of care beyond their allocated federal grant funding.

Pointer #155

Do Fathers Benefit from Parent Training Programs?
(March, 2008)

This meta-analysis sought to investigate the effects of parent training programs on fathers. More specifically, it sought to examine previous studies to determine (1) whether including fathers in parent training enhances children’s outcomes and (2) whether mothers and fathers benefit equally from parent training programs.

Pointer #154

Public Attitudes towards Children with Mental Health Conditions
(February, 2008)

These two studies examine the cultural context and public attitudes regarding children with mental health conditions and available treatments.

Pointer #153

Who Completes Child Maltreatment Prevention Programs?
(January, 2008)

While evaluation programs are important, it is also crucial to understand what influences program completion by participants. This article examines factors related to program completion among families enrolled in a child neglect preventive intervention.
