Our research is designed to promote the transformation of mental health care by increasing knowledge of supports, services, and policies that:

  • Build on family strengths;
  • Are community based, family driven, and youth guided;
  • Promote cultural competence; and
  • Are based on evidence of effectiveness.

The Research & Training Center maintains a number of resources for families, professionals, and anyone who is interested in children's mental health.

  • Publications: Monographs, articles, and other publications by staff of the Research andTraining Center are available for ordering online or for immediate downloading.

  • Focal Point: The Research and Training Center produces a bulletin, Focal Point, which is published semiannually and mailed free of charge to 35,000 readers. Back issue and articles are available.

  • Annual Conference: Our annual "Building on Family Strengths" Conference continues to offer a forum for families and professionals to meet and exchange new ideas, research findings, and innovative service approaches. The next conference is scheduled for early summer of 2009 at the Hilton Hotel in Portland, Oregon.

  • Data Trends: The Research and Training Center at Portland State University collaborates with the Research and Training Center at the University of South Florida to produce "Data Trends," a series of one-page briefs addressing current themes, summarizing recent articles, or presenting new developments in the field of children's mental health.

  • Featured Discussions: Our "Featured Discussions" provide an opportunity for expressing and exchanging opinions on topics related to family support and children's mental health.

  • National Events Calendar: Our events calendar provides a list of conferences, trainings, workshops, and other events relevent to children's mental health that are occurring throughout North America.

  • Link and Tools: This page provides links, tutorials, glossaries and other resources pertaining to children's mental health.

  • Lists: We maintain both an email list and a regular mailing list, and anyone can subscribe to one or both of them. Email list subscribers receive "RTC Updates," a monthly emailed newsletter that includes information about new research and developments in the field of Children's Mental Health, the RTC's publications, products, research and conference, and topics under discussion in the Featured Discussions section of our web site. Subscribers to our paper mailing list receive free issues of our bulletin Focal Point as well as information about our annual "Building on Family Strengths" conference.
